Rehab with Golf: 7 Items You’ll want to bring out on the Course With You

Golf is a great rehabilitation activity because it allows the player to get some light exercise and have some fun while doing so. Whether you managed to hurt yourself on the course, getting to the course, or somewhere else and ended up wishing you were on the course golf is great way to rehab from an injury. For the passionate golfer who just can’t stay off the course it is always important to remember safety. If your troubles are with your knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, ankle, or your neck a game of golf is just subtle enough to slowly help you get back into shape but it is also demanding enough to re-aggravate these sorts of injuries. Here are a few items you should take out with you on the course in case you re-injure yourself or feel it start to nag at you:

1. A Fellow Player

If you are injured or in recovery, DO NOT set out to play a game by yourself. If you are dead set on playing that day and no friends or family members are up for it, join another group. The last thing you want is for something to go wrong and leave you in the middle of the fairway re-injured and possibly less capable of getting to help.

2. Athletic Tape

If your injury well enough that it just requires some extra stability get it taped up before you head out on to the course. If the tape starts come loose as you play, have some athletic tape and wrap on you so that you can re-tape or adjust it. Take some time to stretch before heading on to the course. Get loose but be sure not to overdo it.

3. Bag Carrier/Golf Car

No matter what your injury is, there is no reason you should be carrying around your bag or dragging it any more than you have to. Rent a golf cart for the day or at the very least get a carrier for your bag. If you have your own cart, be sure to have it inspected before you take it out. Take any necessary precautions like a gas can or some spare golf cart tires out with you in case something obnoxiously horrible should happen.

4. Plenty of Extra Balls

However many balls you take out with you when you’re healthy, double it when you are less than 100%. Your injury alone could be enough to increase your rate of slices, water balls, or any other shots that end up in hazards. Have enough balls on you that you could not possibly run out and avoid potentially re-injuring yourself by trying to take awkward hazard shots.

5. Braces

Similar to athletic tape, if you have an injury that just requires extra stability consider wearing a brace out on the course. Knees and elbow injuries are especially susceptible to aggravation throughout the game. If you feel things starting to tighten up or sting, put the brace on. If you already have it on and things are starting to nag it might be a good idea to call it a day.

6. Liquids/Meds

Hydration is essential, especially if it’s warm out and you are on meds for the injury. Some medications can make you fatigued on their own. Without proper hydration you will be more susceptible to slips, tweeks, or poor technique in your swing. Joints like the elbow and knee require water to maintain proper function as they have little to no blood supply. Take some water bottles out with you and keep those joints oiled and lubed up.

7. Your own Custom Fitted Clubs

Whether you are a regular golfer or someone who goes once a year it is important you are using properly fitted clubs if you are injured. Improperly fitted clubs can cause enough chronic injuries simply due to the improper form they can force a golfer in and are one of the biggest mistakes beginning golfers can make. Who knows, this may be the cause of your injury, never underestimate the value of proper form and proper clubs.
